Brechin Hill

The Brechin Hill area in Nanaimo is the Hillside you are greeted with when you first come off the Departure Bay ferry and runs south to downtown.

The neighbourhood is made up of mostly older character and bungalow homes - a perfect place to find a starter home or investment property.

It's in this area where you can find a single-family home under $450k or a fixer-upper under $400k with a good sized yard and million dollar view of the ocean.

Brechin Hill is nice and central to Nanaimo. You can easily walk to groceries, sushi or grab a Starbucks at the top of Brechin Hill or take a brisk 30 minute walk downtown. Hop in the car and be at any number of parks or shopping centres in 5 minutes.

Much of the waterfront towards Departure Bay is still being used as a shipyard, storage facility or just abandoned. There are a couple of popular neighbourhood pubs and marinas in between. It's also here that people will take their kayak or paddle board and put it in the water to travel to across the narrow and protected channel to Necastle Island.

As you travel more south along the water (more towards downtown), there are a number of great waterfront condo developments (some old and some new). This is a dream location for those looking to be close to the water and can picture themselves taking a stroll along the harbourfront walkway. The walkway doesn't yet go all the way to the Departure Bay ferry terminal (they have been talking about extending it for some years now). However, you can pick it up at Townsite Marina and walk it for a good 2 km stretch to downtown.

This part of Nanaimo definitely becomes more lively in the summer months with all the boaters and people enjoying Nanaimo's gorgeous harbour.

The prices of the condo developments along this stretch can vary quite a bit. Some newer construction townhouses right on the water are going for $650k, while some apartments further back with gorgeous marina and ocean views are selling for $500k and older apartments with close proximity can sell for low $200s.
